Finished Projects - Colette Macaron & Onion 1041

Stellar constellation must be right today - I can't belive it myself that I'm finally writing this post about my Colette Macaron Dress. I started planning this dress in August!! I bought the pattern and some fabric in early September and then procrastinated  for another couple of weeks. I was afraid of the fabric(s) and I was afraid of the construction. I wanted to wear the dress to the wedding at the Baltic sea on 4th of October (which I did) but didn't start it until two days before we left to our trip to the North. I finished it the day before the wedding in our holiday flat. Now I already wore it to a second wedding which happened three weeks ago, where I also managed to take some photos. Fast forward to this cold November day, I am finally ready to show it to you.

I made a muslin of the bodice in a size 12, which is one size smaller than my usual. The muslin looked almost perfect, only the armholes were a bit too restraining. I changed the pattern and raised the armhole a bit before cutting my fabric. I cut the skirt in a size 14 - not because I needed it but I wanted the skirt to be a bit more tulip shaped. To create that shape I deepened the pleats so the skirt would fit the size 12 bodice again.

For the yoke and sleeves I used a quite stable cotton sateen. The fabric is absolutely awesome because it's shiny, soft and feels great against the skin but it was so easy to work with. It's thick enough so that the facings don't show on the outside which was my biggest concern.

The lower bodice and skirt are made of a quite stretchy velveteen. I wish I had bought some better quality fabric - this one was only 8 Euros/metre. The stretch gave me a hard time because the single pieces just grew larger and larger with every seam. I added a lining to the skirt so that the skirt wouldn't stick to thicker tights. I basted the lining and the skirt together before attaching them to the bodice as one piece. At that time, the waist band had grown so much and the skirt didn't fit anymore. I had to take it off again and make it smaller.

I have the feeling that the dress is a bit wonky now because the fabric isn't stretched evenly. Next time I'm definitely going to use a more stable velveteen - and there is going to me a lot of next times.

When attaching the yoke to the bodice, the pattern instructions ask you to press the lower part's seam allowance in place, then lay it on top of the yoke and topstitch around the sweetheart neckline. This was the main reason why it took me so long to even start sewing the dress. I knew I wouldn't be able to press the velveteen accurately enough to do that and I also didn't want any topstitching on this fabric. Instead of just trying out another method on the muslin I just thought and thought and consulted the interwebs countless times. I got some encouragment in the Colette Patterns flickr discussion board eventually and tried it the "normal" way - which worked just as good. I staystitched the sweetheart line on the yoke, clipped everything inside the seam allowance and then just attached to the bodice princess style. To create a sharp tip in the middle I did one side first, starting in the middle and then did the same for the other side. It looks really good, even with the two different fabrics so it turns out I didn't have to worry at all.

Ich habe also echt unnötig prokrastiniert.

All in all, I'm really happy with the dress. The fact that I wore it to two weddings tells how much I like it ;-). I find the inisides a bit messy, which is due to the hurry. In the pictures it also appears to be a bit too short. I hemmed it invisibly by hand so I'm going to open the hem again and see how much I can still let it out.

The second time I wore it, I also had a self-made jacket to go with the dress. I bought a jacket pattern in Berlin, which is Onion 1041. It's a really simple pattern which doesn't require any lining. I took it as another practice before hitting the winter coat project. Finding a fabric for the jacket still gave me a hard time. The patterns suggests some heavy-weight and sturdy fabric like brocade. I'm sure it looks great - problem is, I don't like brocade because it always comes in such flowery patterns. I opted for this strange fabric, a thick cotton/poly blend. It's probably meant to be used for upholstery rather than for a garment but who cares. I don't. With 6 Euros/metre it was a bargain as well. The checked structure makes it interesting but it's still a plain black jacket somehow. I just wanted something that I could wear to special occasions over a chique dress like my macaron.

To make the un-lined insides prettier, I finished all the seams with bias binding. I used some hemming tape (the stuff that comes iwth IKEA curtains) for the lower hem, the sleeve hems and to keep the facings in place. It's a shortcut I'm not so proud of but I don't have any stitching lines on the outside of the garment which is great.

The pattern is the easiest option for an outerwear garment. It only has a couple of pattern pieces and comes together quickly. I only had the Danish instructions, which wasn't a problem because it's no rocket science (if you have assembled a collar before). The back bodice was supposed to be cut in two pieces but I decided to cut it on the fold. No need for a straight seam in the middle of my back, right? The only negative obout this jacket is that it doesn't have pockets. A jacket without pockets? Yep, that's what someone should ask BEFORE sewing it and then add some pockets. I didn't. And now I ask myself - why on earth did I sew a jacket without pockets? It really doesn't make sense. I will definitely open up the side seams again and add some in-seam pockets. No big deal  - but, really, what was I thinking?

Well, it's time for some tea and a game of Scrabble. I like November Sundays :-) Have a cozy one everbody!

  3. Your version of the macaron dress is lovely! Very good choice with the velveteen and the floral print fabric, they have matched perfect! And the jacket is also very cute. I love the whole outfit!

  4. Total klasse!
