Camí Dress

Only last week, lovely Fench seamstress Pauline introduced her very first commercial pattern, the Camì Dress. I had one look and thought "Oh my god, it's a shirt dress!". I was convinced right away and hit the download button. I also started sewing immediately since I was planning to wear the new dress to a family gathering last Friday. I had the black and blue fabric in my stash already.

I made version B with the longer sleeves and cuffs. The bodice itself is quite simple with darts in the front and back. Perfect for anyone looking for a classic shirt dress pattern. The skirt is very full and has in-seam pockets. Since it's made of two rectangles, you could easily decide to make a smaller or even fuller version.

I decided against a muslin, although Pauline's size range doesn't even cover my measurements. The largest size in the pattern is a French 44 and I am a 46. I wanted the dress to be quite fitted anyways and thought that I could still sew the button tab closed in the end if it strained too much. As you can see, the fit is great and I decided to close the button tab anyway. And I omitted the buttons! Instead, I made a matching belt with a small black buckle (I had the buckle at home but no black buttons).

The only thing I am not totally happy with is that the waist line sits a bit above my natural waist. Had I done a muslin, I would have decided to lengthen the bodice a bit. I have read on the internet that other tall girls had the same "problem", so be aware if you're one of us and planning to make this dress. I mean, a high waist highlights the 50's silhouette but I don't feel 100% comfortable and have to remember to stand up straight all the time. Otherwise the skirt leans forward and I look quite pregnant.

All in all, the Camí Dress is a really nice pattern and Pauline wrote some detailed and clear instructions! The design is very simple and this makes the pattern so versatile. I will definitely make another version, a bit less fitted to make it more casual. Pauline did a really great job and I look forward to see more  from her in the future!

By the way, I wasn't wearing the dress Friday night - it was just too hot for long sleeves. We had like 30 degrees and were celebrating in a marquee. While I am now writing this I am covered with a cozy blanket and I'm drinking some hot tea. This week of sewing will be dedicated to the autumn projects for sure!

LG

  9. You must be standing up straight in these photos, because I think the silhouette looks perfect on you! Not pregnant at all. How smart to close up the button placket--I have avoided shirtdresses for that reason.
